At St Peter Claver College, we recognise that young adolescents have distinct academic, pastoral and social needs as they transition into secondary schooling. During this time, students develop both essential academic skills and the dispositions needed to persevere, adapt and grow as learners.
For this reason, we place a strong focus on Years 7, 8 and 9 as the Middle Years. Teaching and learning environments are intentionally designed to maximise motivation and engagement while fostering academic tenacity, productive struggle and resilience. Students are supported to persist through challenge, respond to feedback and understand that effort and setbacks are a natural and valuable part of learning.
Tailored Middle Years Curriculum
The Middle Years are critical in sustaining student engagement while building strong foundations in literacy, numeracy, critical and creative thinking, collaboration and digital capability. Alongside academic development, we prioritise the growth of key learning behaviours such as perseverance, independence, self-regulation and confidence in tackling challenges.
Our Middle Years curriculum is intentionally designed to meet the needs of young adolescents and support lifelong learning. It emphasises:
- Moving each learner forward through appropriate challenges that builds persistence and confidence.
- Strong teacher-student relationships that encourage academic risk taking and resilience.
- Integrated and multidisciplinary learning that is relevant, challenging and engaging.
- Higher order thinking and problem solving to deepen understanding.
- Collaborative learning that strengthens communication, teamwork and responsibility.
- Clear, explicit teaching and assessment with high expectations and purposeful feedback.
Acceleration Framework
We implement a clear Acceleration Framework that provides structured pathways in Mathematics and English. This framework also informs pedagogical practices across all learning areas, ensuring effective differentiation for students identified as gifted or talented. Acceleration Framework allows students to engage with learning at an increased pace and depth. It is not about doing more work, but about working with greater challenge, complexity and rigour. Students are supported to persist through demanding tasks, engage deeply with concepts and develop strong academic tenacity. Students participating in the Acceleration Framework are further supported to build resilience, independence and confidence as learners.

Year 7
The Year 7 curriculum has been consciously designed with the transition to secondary schooling in mind. Our structures allow strong and consistent relationships to be formed and provide a supportive environment as students adjust to increased academic expectations. Students are supported to feel settled and confident through Home Class activities, remaining with their classmates for core subject pairings and learn within a purpose-built Year 7 area. This environment helps minimise movement across a large campus, builds a sense of security and allows students to focus on developing positive learning habits and resilience. The settled atmosphere created in Year 7, combined with a Personal and Social Development Program, assists students to form friendships, develop confidence, engage in productive struggle and achieve their personal best in learning.

Year 8
The Year 8 curriculum is designed to support students in working confidently as individuals and collaboratively within groups. It acts as a stepping stone between the strong sense of belonging developed in Year 7 and the increasing independence required as students begin to pursue elective subjects. Students are encouraged to take greater responsibility for their learning, manage challenges more independently and continue developing academic tenacity. Security and belonging are maintained through continuity of Home Class groups from Year 7 and their Pastoral Leader.

Year 9
Year 9, the final year of the Middle Years, is underpinned by the themes of Choice, Challenge and Competence. Students select a greater number of subjects. This structure supports independence, adaptability and resilience as students work with a wider range of peers and teachers in preparation for Senior Years learning. As students enter their third year within Home Class groups, they also begin to take on emerging leadership responsibilities and develop greater accountability within their pastoral groups.

Home Learning
Learning in the Middle Years establishes a vital pathway to lifelong learning and future success. Effective learning requires strong engagement at the College, supported by purposeful and consistent learning at home.
Teaching staff work closely with students to set meaningful home learning opportunities that consolidate understanding, reinforce learning habits and develop independence, perseverance and time management skills. These tasks also help parents/caregivers understand what students are learning and support a strong partnership between home and the College.
When home learning tasks are not completed, teachers engage students in conversations about effort, responsibility and the impact on learning. The College communicates with families through the Claver Academic Tracker system when academic expectations are not being met, as well as when effort, improvement and persistence are worth recognising and celebrating.
Across the Middle Years, student motivation and engagement are strengthened through intentionally designed learning environments that value challenge, support productive struggle and develop resilient, confident and capable lifelong learners.
