Senior Years - Years 10, 11 and 12

At St Peter Claver College, the Senior Years are a time of purpose, personalisation and preparation – a time when students come to deeply understand not only what they can achieve, but who they are becoming.

We partner with students and families to design meaningful pathways that lead to confident, capable young adults – young people who leave Claver knowing they can succeed, contribute and shape their future.

Our approach reflects a deep commitment to the formation of the whole person – academically, spiritually, socially and emotionally – ensuring every student is known, supported and challenged to achieve their personal best.

A Personalised Pathway for Every Student

At Claver, we believe that when students are supported to recognise their strengths and aspirations, they begin to Know they can succeed in their chosen pathway.

Every student develops an individualised Senior Education and Training (SET) Plan that is responsive, flexible and future-focused.

Whether a student is:

  • Pursuing a competitive ATAR pathway for university entry.
  • Combining academic study with vocational qualifications.
  • Preparing for apprenticeships, traineeships or direct employment.

Our programs are designed to ensure each student builds both the confidence and capability to move forward with clarity and purpose.

Students graduate not only with recognised qualifications, but with a strong sense of direction and belief in what they can achieve.

Guidance, Mentorship and Growth

A hallmark of the Claver experience is the strength of our relationships and the way we walk alongside students as they grow in confidence.

Throughout Years 11 and 12, students work closely with dedicated Course Mentors who support them to:

  • Clarify goals and aspirations.
  • Make informed subject and pathway decisions.
  • Monitor progress and wellbeing.
  • Adapt plans as their confidence and direction evolve.

Through this personalised support, students develop independence and resilience and most importantly, the confidence to recognise they are capable of success in their chosen pathway.

Formation experiences, including retreats and Pastoral programs, further strengthen students’ sense of identity, belonging and purpose.

Year 10: Exploration and Confidence

Year 10 is a critical transition year designed to build both capability and confidence as students move toward their Senior pathway.

Students are supported to:

  • Deepen their understanding of core learning areas.
  • Explore emerging interests and strengths.
  • Begin making informed decisions about their future.
  • Establish a strong foundation for success in the Senior Years.

Key features include:

  • Opportunities to explore Australian Curriculum subjects, specialised adapted curriculum subjects that support transition to and preparation for QCAA Senior subjects, and Religious Education.
  • Opportunities for acceleration and enrichment.
  • Structured career education and goal-setting programs.
  • Work experience and early engagement with Vocational Education and Training (VET) and apprenticeships.

By the end of Year 10, students are not only prepared for Senior study, they have begun to understand their strengths and to believe they can make confident choices about their future.

Years 11 And 12: Pathways to Success

In the Senior Years of learning, students engage in a diverse range of academic and vocational opportunities designed to support multiple post-school destinations.

Claver offers clearly defined pathways, including:

  • ATAR Pathway: Best for high academic achievers (always As and Bs) who want to study at university. In most cases students will study at least five General subjects.
  • ATAR with Insurance: Best for students who are typically successful in their subjects (averaging Bs) and want to pursue university. Students will typically study four General subjects plus a Certificate III vocational subject.
  • Flexible Pathways: Best for students who are unsure of whether they want to go to university after graduating. Students will start with subjects that act as prerequisites for tertiary study while also completing a Certificate III vocational subject. They can then refine their career pathway and subject selection with their Course Mentor if needed.
  • Vocational Pathway: Best for students who wish to commence employment after graduating (e.g. Apprenticeship, Traineeship, TAFE courses or direct entry into the workforce). Students will typically choose more certificate level and Applied subjects, as opposed to General subjects designed for university entry. Students will select the Mathematics subject that best suits their ability.

Across all pathways, students access:

  • General and Applied subjects.
  • Nationally recognised VET qualifications.
  • School-based Apprenticeships and Traineeships.
  • Tailored subject combinations to meet tertiary prerequisites.

Our curriculum continues to evolve in response to labour trends, tertiary pathways and emerging industries, ensuring students graduate with both relevance and confidence.

Preparing for Life Beyond School

Success in the Senior Years is not defined by a single pathway – it is defined by readiness for life beyond school.

At St Peter Claver College, students graduate with:

  • The Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE).
  • Potential ATAR results for university entry.
  • Industry-recognised VET qualifications.
  • Real-world experience and employability skills.

More importantly, they leave as young people who understand their strengths, value their growth and know they can contribute meaningfully to their communities and the world.

The Claver Difference

Our Senior Years program is grounded in a simple but powerful belief: when students are known, supported and challenged, they come to know they can.

Through personalised learning, strong relationships and a commitment to excellence, we ensure every student is prepared, not only for their next step, but for a future filled with possibility.
