Opening Liturgy 2025

On Wednesday 26 February 2025 the St Peter Claver College Community came together to celebrate the new school year at our Opening Liturgy which included a blessing of everyone present.

Reverend Father Peter Gablonski celebrated the Liturgy of the Word; our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, led by Rhan Hooper, performed a traditional Welcome dance, and our College Choir and Band shared their musical talents. Angela Ryan, Assistant Principal Identity and Formation welcomed the community to Va Pasifika. She reminded us of the special significance of the word 'Va' – the space between, not empty space, not space that separates, but space that holds separate things together in the unity. It reminds us to cherish our community and the relationships that unite us.

On behalf of our four 2025 College Captains, Isaac Fonomaalii addressed the College, sighting unity and inclusiveness as paramount.

“Remember, we are stronger together, and supporting each other is key to our success," he said.

The 2025 Student Leaders also shared their vision for the College this school year:

  • Shine: It's a doing word, a verb. What are you doing today to allow your best self to be seen, heard and felt?
  • Hope: What words of hope do you say to yourself and to others around you?
  • Look Beyond: Where do you need to forgive, forget, move on, learn more or understand more?

“Let's embrace this vision but make it more than just words. Let's bring it to life as we work together, champion each other and celebrate our fantastic community. Let's wear our College motto proudly," Isaac said.

Isacc also added: “Get to know us, come and say 'hello' and talk to us about what your hopes are for this year".

Following Rev Fr Gablonski's words of inspiration during his Homily and knowing the College Captains would provide a powerful message to their peers, Principal Bruce McPhee provided a very short address with a simple introduction to a adage which will be unpacked over the coming fortnight.

"You can't put the toothpaste back in the tube," Mr McPhee said.

We look forward to hearing how this proverb ties into today's messages over the coming days and weeks.
